Dear Toolbox Readers, I have to tell you that I have always found it odd to wish someone a "Happy Memorial Day". Memorials by their very nature are somber, reflective events. It just seems like we are being bombarded with commercialized "holidays" driving us to the mall to get a flag, fire up the grill... drink your favorite patriotic beer. It seems to me that a holiday dedicated to honoring fallen heroes that have served this country to defend your freedom to take a 3 day weekend should at least include some time set aside to actually HONOR the vets that have served. America has had many wars in it's history and people of the day always had differing views on the issues surrounding the conflicts. There are always those who politicize the events around war and argue the points of any particular ideal. I think that memorial day should transcend the petty debates surrounding any particular war and be seen as an opportunity to take a look at the character of the people that actually paid the price for your freedom to spout off opinions and rhetoric. Soldiers love their country and are willing to die for it. WOW! What are you willing to die for? You must consider that we get new fallen heroes in the current conflicts and the idea of memorializing fallen heroes is one that plays out in living rooms across this country all year long as more soldiers lose life and limb while fighting the current wars. In a time of war it seems to me that the fallen heroes of the current conflicts need to be honored as well. Did you know that congress passed legislation stating Veterans had a right to at least 2 uniformed military people to fold the flag and play taps on a CD player at their funerals? A CD Player...? Really? I must say... I agree whole heartedly that each and every veteran should get honored at their funeral by the military. But I think that we should do even more... and so does Tom Day who founded Bugles Across America. Bugles Across America was started to take this a step further, and in recognition of the service these Veterans provided their country, he felt that every Veteran deserved a live rendition of taps played by a live Bugler. Bugles Across America now has over 5000 bugler volunteers located in all 50 states and growing number overseas. The Department of Veterans Affairs is expecting more than 1/2 million veterans to pass every year for the next 7 years. Bugles Across America is ALWAYS recruiting new volunteers. Bugler Volunteers can be male or female. They can play a traditional bugle with no valves, or they can perform the ceremony on a Trumpet, Cornet, Flugelhorn, or a 1, 2 or 3 valved bugle. The bugler can be of any age as long as they can play the 24 notes of Taps with an ease and style that will do honor to both the Veterans, their families, and the burial detail performing the service. Tom has been running this non-profit network in order to ACTUALLY HONOR Veterans with a live bugler at their funerals and I think that this effort deserves OUR support. Every year Tom runs a deficit from his operations and has to pick up the tab for about 10 grand a year. This year, I want to honor Tom Day, for actually honoring fallen veterans and I want you to help by supporting his operation so that they will be able to treat all the fallen heroes that will come to pass with this fantastic salute to their service. You can learn more about Bugles Across America Here and if you happen to have a happy memorial day... Thank A Vet! The show will be Monday Night This week...
